Aug. 8 – 10
Comcast San Jose Jazz Festival: Back for its much-anticipated 19th year, the festival, sponsored by Southwest Airlines will feature hundreds of musicians performing on 10 stages throughout the downtown San Jose area. Headlining performers will include: David Sanborn, James Hunter, The Manhattan Transfer, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Yosvany Terry, Bill Holman Orchestra, and George Brooks’ Summit with Zakir Hussain. San José Chamber Orchestra presents “Opera!” at Le Petit Trianon, 72 N. 5th Street, San Jose at 7 p.m. This production starring Christopher Bengochea, is conducted by Barbara Day-Turner and features Layna Chianakas, Malcolm MacKenzie and Rachelle Perry-Ward. The works of Puccini, Verdi, Gounod, Bizet, Mascagni, Massenet, Offenbach, Henry Mollicone and Alva Henderson will be presented. Tickets are $30-45. Target presents Symphony Silicon Valley in a free family concert. Discovery Meadow Symphony Silicon Valley will perform the best loved music of musical theater, ballet, opera and symphony in a 3 p.m. al fresco concert at Discovery Meadow, next to Children’s Discovery Museum, located at West San Carlos and Woz Way, San Jose. This free outdoor concert event will include selections from Bizet’s Carmen and Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony as well as special children’s activities. Get ready as San Jose Stage Company’s “Altar Boyz” rocks you to the heavens. Hitting The Stage, in downtown San Jose, this hilarious off-Broadway musical phenomenon highlights quintessential boy band, Altar Boyz as they set out to “raise the praise” with every concert performance. Directed by SJSC’s Rick Singleton, Altar Boyz combines spectacular dance moves, angelic vocals and a touching story line to capture with perfect pitch the unique “boy band” culture. The antique jewels of the San Jose Fire Museum are on exhibit at the new Club Auto Sport showroom. Event dates are July 2 through Aug. 29, Wednesday through Friday, from noon to 6 p.m. and on Saturdays 8/9 & 8/23 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free. Club Auto Sport is the area’s premier attraction for auto enthusiasts and collectors, located at 521 Charcot Ave., San Jose.

Aug. 9
California Sports Center hosts “Learn a Cartwheel Day.” In celebration of the Summer Olympic Games and the sport of gymnastics, the public is invited to drop-in to any of the San Jose California Sports Center locations on Aug. 9 between the hours of 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. for a free cartwheel mini-lesson with a gymnastics instructor. These lessons are open to boys & girls ages 3 – 16 only. In addition to offering free mini-lessons, this event also marks the first day of official fundraising at California Sports Center on behalf of the Children’s Miracle Network, and in honor of National Gymnastics Day (Sept 13th). Children’s Musical Theatre San Jose presents Pinocchio at the Montgomery Theater: Good-hearted Geppetto, the lonely woodcarver, fashions himself a son from wood only to have his creation spring to life. This CMT musical adaptation of the timeless children’s classic follows the boy-puppet Pinocchio in his quest to become a “real” boy. Free Ice Cream! Want to do something different this summer to help your community and get a free ice cream as a reward? The Heritage Rose Garden needs volunteers to snip all the dead roses in order to promote more bloom. Help us out on from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., with a sweet payoff at the end. No experience necessary. Volunteer experts will show you how.  Bring your own clippers, or borrow one from the staff.  It will be an enjoyable and rewarding way to spend a summer evening. Aug. 16
As part of the Campbell Library Adult Summer Reading Club, there will be a free book discussion of The Spellman Files by Lisa Lutz. The author will be attending this free event to join in the discussion and answer questions. Barnes and Noble will have copies of the book for sale, and the author will be available for signing. This event is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. in the Community Room of the Campbell Public Library. Light refreshments will be served. It is free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome. Campbell Artists’ Guild Meeting & Demonstration: Our featured artist for August is Sandra Jones. The session will be in figurative realism, featuring a high contrast, black and white charcoal on toned paper. 37th Annual Mountain View Art & Wine Festival: One of America’s top art festivals, more than 200,000 arts lovers gather on Mt. View’s Castor Street between EL Camino Real and Evelyn Avenue for this vibrant multicultural celebration featuring 650 artists and craftmakers showing an eclectic mix of handcrafted wares, live entertainment, scrumptious food and drink, “green” product exhibits and a one-of-a-kind Kids’ Park with breakdancing, hip-hop, magicians, jugglers, comedy, sing-alongs, amusements and hands-on art.
